Some weeks back, the lovely people at Ogilvy invited me to a Canon blogger event, in which they showcased the 7D, 100mm f/2.8L macro lens, amongst many other gadgets. I was most interested in the 7D especially since hearing Maye-E extolling its virtues.

Being there was like a twitter meet-up too, and I found myself introducing me as my twitter nick more than my real name. Hence, keeping to the twitter theme, everybody I link here will be linked to their twitter accounts!

Upon arriving there, Noel (who is really such a darling) from Ogilvy, handed me the 100mm f/2.8L macro lens to play around. I rarely use much macro (although sometimes I wish I brought my 50mm macro lens out more too) and I’m seeing how handy this 100mm lens will be when I do more food shoots.

Test shot of my drink with the 100mm macro lens.

The exciting bit came when I got to play around with the 7D and THAT CAMERA IS FAST! That to me, was the biggest draw of the camera, along with the fact that it has a 1.6x sensor that makes it perfect for sports and events. Don’t get me wrong — I still love my full-frame 5D MKII. Different cameras, different strokes, that’s all. I have requested for a review set of the 7D and am still eagerly awaiting its arrival. Hope I’ll have an event to shoot during the time I’ve got it.

Test photos from the 7D

The people I met:

Kevin and Nicholas

Noel, who took my photo for the Dove Go Fresh Campaign

Super tall Noel and Claudia

Kevin having great difficulty finishing the chocolate cake

Dr Noel and his assistant, Glenn. (Glenn actually likes Noel more than what he shows in this photo.)

It’s no secret that I am a Mac fangirl. HP took a leap of faith and handed me an HP Mini this year, knowing that I’d be won over by the machine’s handy size, despite it being a Windows computer. And they were right. On the occasions where I would not be doing photo processing work, on the go, I bring the HP Mini because it fits snugly in my bag without looking like I’m running away from home.

I only wish that the processor was fast enough to handle the slideshows I create for my wedding clients to play at the wedding dinner.

During that time, I lusted over the Vivienne Tam version of the HP Mini. I loved how it was red and bold, and made to look very much like a fashion accessory.

HP has outdone itself this time by its collaboration with world-renouned Dutch industrial designer, Tord Boontje. It was launched at Bar 84, Gallery Hotel, over the weekend, organised by HP Singapore and Waggener Edstrom.

This is my friend, Josie aka @omgitsjosie, who forgets that she’s Asian. <3
Next to her is @gnoserif.

The delightful, Pat Law.

It features the industry’s first 3D PC surface technology — HP Imprint 3D, which gives depth to Boontje’s design of flora and endangered animals on the casing of the Mini. It really is rather gorgeous and we each received an umbrella with the imprint too! (Not with the HP Imprint 3D, of course!)

Tord signing my umbrella.

What’s best about this new mini — it runs on Windows 7 and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the OS. I really want to try it. And if the processor is fast enough, it would be an excellent computer to bring for my wedding shoots, without adding too much weight to my current gear.

With Tord, and trying not to topple over him.

Get the HP Mini by Studio Tord Boontje exclusively with StarHub today.

Originally published at As My Life Is. You can comment here or there.

Jaws got lost over the weekend.

Clare was annoying Jaws on Saturday morning, by rough handling her and was tugging at her legs. I warned Clare many times not to do it lest she gets bitten. The kiddo ignored me (as a 3 going on 13-year-old would) and suffered the consequences when Jaws decided she had enough.

I told Clare that she totally deserved it and refused to pander to her hysterics. (It wasn’t a bad bite either, just a warning one.) And behind Clare’s back, I punished Jaws by smacking her once, so that she too knows that it’s not right to sink her teeth into anyone, particularly family.

Soon after, Jaws slipped out. When we realised she went missing, we searched the whole block and walked round the entire estate. We later put up posters at the lift lobbies.

This is not the first time Jaws left home. The strange thing though, she doesn’t have the inclination to run out each time the door opens because I usually leave the door open when I’m at home. It’s unpredictable behaviour and it really depends on her mood. The past 3-4 times that she’s walked out, we’ve caught her in the act, except for once when a neighbour found her and informed us he’s got her. What I find most bizarre about this latest incident is, Jaws has been very affectionate of late.

While she was gone, I went into this tirade about how I can’t stand the little dog for abandoning me and that I never want to see her again. When secretly inside, I was heartbroken.

The next morning, someone calls me to say that she’s got Jaws. What’s lovely about her is that she, too, has been walking Jaws around the estate in hope of finding her owners. We just somehow missed each other. She also explained that when her female dog was in heat, she, too, tried to leave home. I suppose it’s their animal instincts to look for a mate? (Yes, Jaws has been in heat for the past week.)

It was a pleasant surprise when the neighbour told us that Jaws was very affectionate towards her and her family, nothing like the crazy-hand-chomping dog I first brought home. (That is how she got her name!) I guess we must have been doing something right with her, and have managed to fix most of her distrust issues. And, unlike her previous owner, we didn’t lose her deliberately and made an effort to look for her.

A very sad thing about this incident though, is that someone removed most of our posters less than 24-hours since we put them up. Before Jaws was returned to us. In fact, we are lucky that the culprit didn’t remove the poster at the block where Jaws was picked-up, lest the neighbour wouldn’t have been able to contact me.

It’s very disheartening to see the ungraciousness of fellow Singaporeans. I can only speculate who might have removed them: [a] A member of the RC (Resident’s Committee) who feels that we didn’t get permission to put up the poster, hence, feels the need to uphold rules by removing them asap; [b] A cleaner who feels that the poster shouldn’t be up and/or doesn’t like dogs; [b] A disgruntled neighbour who thinks we are vandalising.

I can only count my lucky stars that whoever removed them, didn’t remove all and left one at the correct lift lobby.

Whatever it is, I’m just glad Jaws is home and I’m going to make her an ID collar with all my contact details. Thanks to all who helped by passing the word online, especially to Pat. We’ve got to set-up that doggy date soon!

Subject: APEC? Is it all just talking?
Security: Public

The last time I covered an APEC Summit was 1997 in Vancouver.

Much of the world has changed since then...and my faith in APEC as a world body that is suppose to break down trade barriers have also faded.

Not many trade barriers were broken down, but a lot of discussions went around.

Will member "economies" achieve any break throughs in Singapore or will they only talk some more?

In 1994, APEC Leaders adopted the Bogor Goals that aim for free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialised economies and by 2020 for developing economies -- we are no where near the implementation of this, though 2010 is just around the corner.

And who will really benefit from an APEC FTA?

Come to think of it, does anyone really care about APEC?

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

I was asked by one of Rie Ink’s interns, Ze Hou, to help out with a photography project — teach children with autism (from the Little Garden Schoolhouse) photography and photograph them in action. This will lead up to an exhibition of my photos and the kids’. I think it will be awesome that we get to see the world through their eyes.

Project Beautiful Minds is a project done by students from the Singapore Management University (SMU) who are taking a module in Leadership and Team Building. You can read a write-up of the project by the Straits Times here.

I was very nervous about teaching the kids. Although I was a teacher for seven years, I taught Speech and Drama, not photography. And I’ve never taught kids with special needs before, although I have encountered one or two during the span of my teaching career.

This was a good stepping stone to teaching photography though — I didn’t have to go into the nuts and bolts about photography. I just had to expose them to the wonderful world of taking pictures, got them used to the concept of photography and how to handle a camera. (I’m headed to International School of Singapore next week to conduct a week-long photography course!)

The kids had a lot of fun! I hooked up my camera to my computer and they could get an instant preview of pictures they took with it. They were very delighted and kept on asking to photograph more! I sent them out on a mini assignment (with help from the SMU students) and it was my turn to be delighted with the results.

The next day, we took the kids out on a field trip to the Botanic Gardens, where they were each given a disposable camera and were pretty much given free reign to walk around and photograph what they want.

It was magic seeing some of their personalities come out during the process. I was particularly touched by Jordyn, a cute six-year-old, who really has a knack for photography. I saw the stuff she photographed during the small assignment on the first day and was impressed by her creative eye. At the Botanics, she seemed very much in her element and went through the film roll quite quickly. One of the SMU students lent her a digital camera, and the little shutterbug continued taking photos with much joy.

Taken by Jordyn.

This was taken at the Botanic Gardens after baking in the sun for a couple of hours. But I still love what Jordyn captured, despite me being very sick and exhausted. I was very sick for two weeks since that day — ended up going to Gleneagles A&E one night because my head wouldn’t stop hurting for more than 24 hours straight.

That’s Jordyn reviewing the photos she took of me!

So yes! The exhibition is going up next week! I’m not putting up all the photos here so that you’ll have stuff to see at the exhibition. Do drop by if you can and thanks in advance!

The Christmas decorations are up early this year. I heard that it’s because of APEC — retailers want to cash in on the hype and also make-up for shopping days lost due to road closures and what not.

I’m not complaining. Christmas IS my favourite time of the year, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.

I recently assisted on a Christmas photoshoot and here are some of the outtakes I took in between punching out paper flowers and trying to come up with kickass product set-up.

John, da photographer, who stole my scissors. And I thought I was going to steal his trade secrets.

Spent some time punching out these flowers and my heart cracked each time a piece fell onto the dirty floor.

Prep work for the photoshoot.

More like Mardi Gras. Very un-Christmassy, these beads.

My favourite shot of the day. Decorative stars made out of sugar for pastries. They weren’t very sweet, strangely.

EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

To be a confident mother, I firmly believe that you should just do what is comfortable to you, as long as no one gets hurt. I have a good friend who is pregnant, and she too (like many of us) has been faced with the ‘good intentions’ of people who feel the need to offload their copious amount of advice. Oftentimes, such advice come along with ‘scare tactics’ on what a mum-to-be should or should not being doing.

For example, “Don’t renovate your house or be around any knocking or drilling if not some physical defect will happen to your baby” or “Don’t go to the zoo if not your baby will look like a monkey.”

On the flipside, there are those who do not understand much, such as the pains and joys of motherhood, and end up questioning your sanity level when you do certain things. I have been asked many times why my daughter keeps on falling sick and why I’m not doing more to prevent it. Or why my daughter’s so skinny.

My daughter was born with a strawberry birthmark on her thigh. I’ve forgotten which one because it has disappeared over the years. The most ridiculous thing I was asked, was “Did you paint your house?”

In the beginning, I would be extremely stressed up over anything because I would question myself over and over again if I was doing enough as a mum. The kid did have her quirks, and having adopted my stubborn gene, there were many frustrating moments.

The monumental event I struggled the most with was her refusal to drink milk from the bottle. She only wanted the breast, and would only drink minute amounts of milk from the bottle while I was at work, and would wait for the big feed when I came home from work. Because of that, I wondered if I was the reason that she was always at the 10th percentile of the growth chart and her constant visits to the doctor.

Her pediatrician told me then that despite her small size, she was still a very active child so I shouldn’t be too fussed about it. My good friend, and fellow mummy blogger, Jean, told me, “Kids fall sick a lot during the early years to build up their immunity.”

That was then I realised — to heck with the what the world says and asks me. I know that I am doing my utmost best to be a good mum. As long as my child is growing up fit and healthy, and not a constant screaming, tantrum throwing brat, I am on the right track.
